A psychiatrist can help you in many ways. From medication prescriptions to recommending other treatments and therapies, a psychiatrist can help you become a healthier and happier version of yourself. In many cases, receiving a proper diagnosis from a psychiatrist can help you find the correct mental health professional to guide you on your healing journey. That being the case, many people wonder how much seeing a psychiatrist will cost.
How much will seeing a psychiatrist cost?
Some states have options for those who have a low income. These behavioural or community mental health clinics sometimes provide a sliding fee scale. Additionally, many private health insurance plans offer psychiatry coverage which may significantly reduce the out of pocket cost to you.
However, you also have the option of seeing a psychiatrist online, through services such as ours, Positive Mind Works.
The cost to see one of our online psychiatrists largely depends on the area in which you live – and you may be eligible for bulk billing. At the time of your enquiry, our reception team will first ask you to provide your suburb and postcode. They will then check to see whether you are eligible for bulk billing or not.
Bulk Billed Psychiatry Appointments
If you are located outside a metropolitan area, you will be eligible for all your psychiatry appointments to be bulk billed.
Medicare Rebates
If you are in a metropolitan area, you are not eligible for your psychiatry appointments to be bulk billed. However, you are eligible for a Medicare rebate. With this, you pay the full fee – $450 upfront and then Medicare will provide a rebate of $250. This leaves you with an out of pocket cost of $200 for your first psychiatry assessment.
Thereafter, all follow-ups with your psychiatrist are billed at a lower cost. For a follow-up appointment, you will pay $200 upfront and then receive a Medicare rebate of $135, leaving a total out of pocket cost of $65.

How to book a Psychiatry Appointment at PMW
To book an appointment with one of our doctors, we first need a referral from your GP. Please visit your GP and ask for your referral to be made out to: Psychiatrist at Positive Mind Works and faxed over to 03 9492 7262 or emailed to: reception@positivemindworks.co. Once we receive your referral, a member of our team will be in touch to book your first assessment.
