DVA Funding
Within Australia, The Department of Veterans Affairs (DVA) provides a range of supports and services for:
- Veterans and their dependants
- Serving and former serving ADF members
- War widow/ers
- Reservists that have at least one day of CFTS (continuous full-time service)
- Reservists that are part of Border Protection Services
Those funded by DVA are eligible for various benefits, including free mental health care. Mental health services may include psychological and/ or psychiatric services. There is never a gap to pay for veterans; if eligible, our service is covered entirely by the DVA funding.
The two types of DVA card holders that are eligible for free mental health care, they are the DVA Gold card and DVA White Card. These cards entitle the holder to free mental health services with a GP, OT, psychologist, or psychiatrist. You do not need to prove that your condition is service-related.
Given that your presenting concern does not need to be service-related, you may decide to seek help for a variety of reasons. Common reasons people seek mental health services include:
- low mood
- anxiety
- relationship difficulties
- unhelpful behaviours
- trouble at work
- difficulties sleeping
- grief and trauma
Our psychology team have Experience working with these issues using a variety of approaches, including:
- Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT)
- Eye movement desensitisation therapy (EMDR)
- Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)
- Narrative Therapy.
Your psychologist will discuss these options with you, and together you can decide on the best path forward. You don’t need to live with these issues; help is available, and with telehealth, it’s never been easier to access.
Our psychiatrists can provide specialist advice about various treatments, including medication. Positive Mind Works subscribes to e-prescribing, so any prescriptions issued by our doctors will be sent directly to your phone to take to your local pharmacy.
For further eligibility information, please read this page here. Be careful to check that the service you decide to access is happy to accept DVA funding. At Positive Mind Works, we welcome DVA-funded clients.
