What is a medico-legal report?
A medico-legal report is a detailed report that contains the results of a psychological assessment in a report that may be used in legal matters such as disputes, compensation claims, personal injury claims, liability matters, and civil and criminal cases. The report determines matters such as the existence of remorse and the probability of reoffending or the extent of an injury sustained. A comprehensive assessment process will be followed, which involves a number of sessions and psychometric evaluation.
You may need a report for any of the following legal matters:
- Personal Injury Claim Assessments
- Motor vehicle accidents
- Post-traumatic Stress Disorder
- Work-related injury
- Chronic pain
- Victim of crime or assault
- Divorce or separation
- Child custody and child protection matters
- Drink driving charges
- Harassment and bullying
- Student study or visa extensions
Or any matters that may come before court authorities, employers, or institutions where your mental and/or physical health or special circumstances may be a factor in the decision making.
How long does a medico-legal report take?
You will require a minimum of two or possibly three sessions for an assessment. Once these have concluded, a report is then written and provided in a timely manner – usually within one to two weeks depending on the complexity of your case and the number of documents needing review.
It is always advised that you book an assessment for a medico-legal report some weeks in advance of when the document is needed to ensure that the report can be written in time. A minimum of two weeks is required for the report to be ready for the necessary date. However, if you need the report writing urgently, speak with a member of our team and we will endeavor to help.
How much does a medico-legal report cost?
Our fees are in line with the recommendations made by the APS.
Assessment sessions are charged at a rate of $260.00 each. The fee for the report can vary between $300-$500 where document reviews are required. Your total account must be prepaid in advance after the first session once the psychologist is able to review how many sessions are required and provide the accurate cost of the report.
